when should you use a web hook and when is a web hook notification that the api that you want to choose so typically this is when you're trying to wait for something to happen inside of a third-party system perhaps there's a list endpoint for widgets you can just go to ask give me the list of widgets give me the list of widgets give me the list of widgets you can do that every second or every five seconds or every minute and then you can do a diff and say like are there any new widgets this is really expensive because every single time you're making those requests you're using your own compute you're using the compute for the server giving you back those widgets that every single time that you're asking for the list of widgets that's making a database call on their end so instead you can use a web hook and say hey widget person here is the url that i want you to update and notify when there is a new widget when a new widget is created tell me about it then you just sit there with your own endpoint called mywebhookhandler and when the widget api finds a new widget was created it can send you a post request telling you hey there was a new widget
