## Transcript

[Music] so if you know stripe you're likely familiar with stripe payments it's a way to charge your customers around the world but today we're discussing a powerful financial service that stripe offers called issuing and it enables you to create your own virtual and physical payment cards that your customers can then go use to pay for things so welcome back to stripe developer office hours i'm cj villa developer advocate here at stripe and i'm joined by steve kaliski an engineer on the issuing team so steve thanks again so much for joining us today can you tell us why issuing is so exciting for developers yeah definitely and thanks for having me so to start you can get started instantly with stripe issuing you can activate issuing right from the dashboard and launch your card program immediately and you can even get physical cards in the hands of your users in just a couple days secondly strike fishing is part of the broader stripe ecosystem you can use connect to issue cards on behalf of your customers and we'll perform the verifications provide the transaction history and enable your users to set custom controls and lastly you can program your carts so you can create cards set spending limits set category limits and even provide custom designs wow awesome that's super powerful so if i'm a developer and i wanted to get started implementing stripe issuing what are sort of the core concepts that i should be thinking about as i go and dive into this implementation at the highest level you'll create a card holder which represents a person or business who will be using the card to make purchases then you can create one or many cards for that card holder depending on your business model you can control how the card can be used you can either do this with spending controls through the api or through the stripe dashboard or by handling the authorization flow in real time using webhooks awesome so you just create a cardholder and then you can create a card for them and stripe's just going to send that physical card in the mail and then the user when they receive it they're going to swipe that card somewhere and you can control exactly how much they're allowed to spend by listening to a web hook that sounds awesome and even more exciting you can load those virtual and physical cards into a card holders digital wallet so they have instant and secure access to funds any way they choose to pay whether that's online through their app or in-store wow okay so you can just like immediately sync directly to their device that's that's awesome so as a developer i'm most excited about the concept of just listening to a web hook and then programmatically approving or declining these payments so could you walk us through one of those web hook handlers so right here i have a ruby server it's using sinatra as the web server and for those who have built integrations with start before this might look a little bit familiar so we have uh endpoint that receives web book events and we do a couple things first we're going to parse the request body and parse the stripe signature this allows us to verify that the request has come from strength in the event that there's an error either verifying that or decoding the body we'll throw an error and return to 400 but once we get past that we're going to look for a particular event which is the issuing authorization request this event occurs right after a user goes to use their card before we approve or decline we're going to send you a notification that details uh information about the authorization and allow you to approve or decline it now this is a little bit different than some of the web hooks that we see in stripe this one is blocking so we will wait for you to reply before we reply back uh with the approval or decline um all right so we've got this off object so what are some pieces of data inside of that auth object that we might look at i assume it has like the amount of the transaction but other than the amount what are some things we might look at to decide whether or not to approve or decline the payment sure so um we'll have information about the merchant so the name of them uh there may be information about the location and also the category as well as as you mentioned the amount in currency you'll also have the id for the card in the card holder as well so let's walk through a couple examples let's say that you and i are going to build a platform for rental cars and we want to issue cards that can only be used at gas stations we can look at the category code in the authorization object and decline any charges that aren't at a gas station or let's say we're building an on-demand food delivery platform where couriers are delivering food from specific vendors we can inspect the merchant name as well as the time of the authorization and the amount to match it against the order that the end customer put in this is to ensure that the cars are only used uh in the time location amount that we specified wow that's super powerful steve and really exciting that you can build such a wide variety of businesses on top of stripe issuing uh i think yeah it'll be really exciting to see what folks build but until then i'm really excited for you to fire up that webhook listener and let's let's go see this thing in action he put it in the box thank you cool appreciate it steve that pizza looks incredible i cannot wait to visit new york thanks a ton for joining us i'm super excited to play with this api and to see what our users will build on stripe issuing yeah uh thank you so much for having me and and just before i leave i want to just note that uh issuing is available in the us today and we just recently uh released availability in europe uh if you're interested in that head over to strike.com issuing to get access and additionally uh if these types of problems these types of tools are interesting to you the issuing team is growing rapidly and we have many open roles uh feel free to head over to stripe.com jobs to check them out thanks again so much for watching and we'll see you next time
