is ruby on rails a programming language no ruby is a programming language ruby on rails is a web framework that is written with the programming language ruby ruby on rails gives you a bunch of tools for doing things like reading and writing to the database or interacting with lots of different databases sending receiving email handling background jobs just generally receiving and responding to web requests ruby on rails is an opinionated and convention over configuration web framework that has tons of powerful features that come right out of the box this is the tool that's used to build airbnb github shopify a lot of massive applications that you've used if you're writing your own application with ruby on rails you'll write some ruby code that's the programming language but you'll also write some html in javascript and css these are also all other programming languages that you'll need to use when you're building a web application this is matt's he's the creator of the ruby programming language this is dhh he created the ruby on rails web framework
