so you have this user model in your database this is an active record model inside of rails and you want to convert it to a hash one thing you can do is call as json on it and this will use the underlying serializable hash method from the active model serialization module and it will give you back a hash so this is super handy especially if you want to go through maybe all of your users and get back a bunch of hashes so that is one way that you can convert an active record model into a hash now if you're building out an api that's responding with json you'll probably want to use jbuilder or activemodel serializers to actually construct the json that you're going to return rather than just calling as json or using serializable hash directly
