## Transcript

hey everyone I thought it might be helpful to just run through quickly how you might collect donations from a transistor dot FM website to you know sometimes your listeners want to support you financially and this is just one of the ways you can do it directly with stripe so it's a pretty affordable and easy to setup with stripes like client only hosted checkout so here's kind of a quick demo of what we're gonna build so on your transistor FM website it's like a demo site on any of the pages you can add custom HTML to the footer and so we're going to set it up so that you can add a one time donation amount and someone can click donate and then it brings you to the stripe hosted page where the person can then check out with their card details this is just like test stuff and click pay and that will donate directly to your website and you'll get like a little email and ding from stripe and you kind of keep oh I I didn't update the URL but we'll go through and I'll show you how to set all that up but you'll be able to keep track of who has donated just like directly from the stripe dashboard really primitive but it's a really affordable way to collect because you're only paying the stripe fees so yeah you can also collect recurring donations so we have we'll have like this demo of like I want to collect 5 bucks or you know the user can enter like the listener can enter how much they want to subscribe a monthly amount for so maybe we say $50 so they're gonna subscribe to your podcast for 50 bucks and again they enter their details here and then once they have completed paying you will receive an email that says they subscribed subscriptions are a little tricky because there's there's not like a great way to set up a page for someone to cancel their subscription on transistor but if you wanted to just like manage all of that through email you could do so so yeah so I just wanted to kind of like show you how to do that so I set up a demo site here on transistor and under the website tab it's like right now it's super primitive but we're going to dump all of our content into this extra footer content section where we can you just like write your HTML and this is gonna be like a stripe demo let's see I already used that subdomain on a different site that I already deleted so okay cool so that worked so we have this is just like a blank brand new transistor FM profile for a new podcast so the first thing we need to do is head over to stripe and create our our products which is going to be like a SKU so the way that client side check how it works is you pass in a SKU or we're gonna create plans and that'll be used for our recurring subscriptions so well do we'll set up everything in stripe to get started and then we will well update okay alright so I'm logged into my stripe dashboard for just like a demo account so the first thing that we want to do is to create a product so I'm in test mode I'm gonna create a product and the product is going to be called my podcast name so I can just say like a villa theory okay that is our podcast and if you want you can set up all this other stuff statement descriptors etc so we're going to create our product and our product is like the podcast but then like the plan or whatever the the thing is that you're gonna create underneath it is going to be how you collect so the plan for the subscription we'll call it a villa theory monthly and I'm gonna add just like a monthly donation as the ID actually you can just leave the ID blank it's gonna give you an ID and that's that's like better practice but the the trick here is that we want to make the price of the subscription one cent and what that allows us to do is control how many subscriptions the user buys which will mean or like the it allows the user to input how much they want to donate each month and so we just like multiply that by the number of plans that they're adding so if we say create a one penny plan that's one cent per month and then in the UI on transistor on the client side we can say like oh they wanted to donate five dollars a month well let's buy 500 of these subscriptions so it's really just like this is a penny plan okay so we're gonna add the pricing plan it's a little bit of a hack but whatever okay and then the next thing we want to do is go to settings checkout enable client only checkout so we want to enable this say allow and then the domain is going to be our stripe demo dot transistor dot F M or your custom your custom domain if you have a custom domain for your transistor website totally possible to do let's say save okay you can also say like I want people to be able to pay with Apple pay or Google pay which is pretty cool you can edit your brand settings if you want your for example if you want check out to look just like your transistor FM website you can set your accent colors and make it look like pretty similar so in our transistor website just for fun let's pick a like a different highlight color maybe we pick this like yeah kind of like a mustard color and how does this work put this in here can i edit this now I want to try to get the hex value for that so that we can do the same exact color on there um it's not the same field color we're using here look like yellowish color if you did um maybe alright whatever it's it's all good so whatever we'll just like assume that that like yellowish color is what we want our brand settings to look like so we can edit our checkout settings brand to have that same yellowish color oh look I saved it so that works okay cool so now I have that nice yellow click save and that will now match like what our website looks like for two whoops oh that's nice okay save the website settings preview the website highlight we have nothing highlighted all right whatever it doesn't really matter let's make that the Brandt or the the player color - just for fun or the player background okay save website refresh okay now the players yellow and then when we go to checkout it'll also be yellow okay so we've branded check out we've got our website up and running we've got a product we want to add so we have our one our recurring product for a villa theory we also want to add a one-time product so after we've enabled client-side checkout we can go create a one-time purchase product and for this one we're going to call it a villa Theory donation and again we want this to be one penny okay and you can you can add an optional image I happen to have a picture here of like what are like podcast icon is so we'll save the product and then what we get out of that is this skew that skew ID is is the ticket here so you'll have to go through these same steps when you go live since we're still in test mode you're gonna get like a different skew ID when you go live but this skew is important so we want to say use with checkout and the success URL is gonna go to HTTPS stripe demo dot transistor dot FM and then we're just gonna say success equals and then so here in the query string you can put a you can put a placeholder so checkout session ID if you're curious about what the checkout session ID was and the cancel URL is I'm just gonna put true it was canceled and that's true and what's cool is if you wanted to you can just like copy and paste the code that's here and or just like click copy and say you're done and then go to your website and drop that into the footer so I just like pasted it in there and click Save and now that's on every page just in the footer and it looks just like this it says checkout you can click the button and it's failing right now and the way that you can tell if it's failing is by looking in the chrome console and looking at the message integration amount must be at least 50 cents USD so right now the checkout amount is one penny cuz we're like the default quantity when we pasted that in the quantity here was one by default so we're redirecting to checkout and the quantity is 1 so if we make this like 500 which is 5 bucks by default if all we do is change this quantity to 500 and click Save now we have a button on our transistor website where people can donate 5 bucks supercool right and it looks like the look and feel of it is nice we've got our like our podcast artwork is here and it matches the colors super cool and if someone donates like we're already able to take fake money at least in test mode and it's just as easy in in live mode so we have cool we've like taking a test payment so if we go look at our payments you see five dollars just exceeded from this person so that's pretty awesome but I wanted to make it like a little bit nicer than just having this checkout button and so what I want to do is kind of like go through and show you how I would implement this with some HTML and JavaScript and also how to do it with with a recurring checkout because we want to be able to say like the ideal would be that someone can enter the specific like amount that they want to donate and then they can click the button and the color should be different than this and the word should probably say donate instead of checkout and like a couple other things so let's go implement that HTML and then we'll drop it into our website and I'll show you what that looks like okay so we've already done this step we've got our products and our yeah we got our product set up now we're going to set up our some HTML and JavaScript and then we're gonna add it to our transistor website okay so the way that I like to do this is I'm just going to create an index that HTML file locally just to like play around and it's gonna be blank to start with and in another directory I'm gonna say HTTP - server you can like NPM NPM install - gee HTTP server and that like gives you a static file server which is super nice and then all you have to do is say HTTP server and that creates a local static file server that you can use that will host your files that are here so I want to just like fire up some HTML also at the end of this like I will put all of the code to do this in a gist so that you can go on github and just like a copy and paste and then change your IDs and stuff if you want okay so first things first is I just want to like see if I'm actually on the page hi localhost 8080 is the port that it started up on okay so that was my old stuff alright and then the other thing this is a kind of a did that work No okay so I'll reload it's called this is like a super like basic way to get auto reloading for HTML pages if you want you put this meta tag you do not want to leave this in there for production but like it's a really easy way to get reloading working when you're just like playing around so this just says like refresh every three seconds or something okay so what we want to do is let's just start with the HTML that they gave us so I'll go back over here copy that again and this is just like all of the HTML and JavaScript that they already gave us that we copied from the stripe dashboard right and that gives us this check up button super cool so let's let's let's improve this so the first thing we need to do or let's actually like look through here so what do we what do we get when we copy that stuff from stripe we get this this script tag that loads stripe J s which is like the client-side library for stripe we get a button tag which is kind of nice and then it says checkout so here the first thing we can do is say like donate instead and if we yep so the donate the text on the button changes to donate has this error message block and then inside of the script tag that they gave us we are initializing the instance an instance of the stripe object with our publishable key that's fine that this publishable key is out there you don't want to share your secret key but your publishable keys fine in fact that's all we need for for this solution okay I'm just going to like scoot this over just a bit okay what else do we have here so we're grabbing a reference to that button with get element by ID and then we're saying when that button is clicked so this is the click we're adding an event listener for the click then when the button is clicked it's going to call this callback function so when it calls the callback function it will call stripe redirect to check out passing in these items these specific items with this quantity so the items is a list of different SKUs or plans and their quantities that you want to purchase and then redirect to checkout also takes a couple other settings namely the success URL and cancel URL it's like where we're gonna come back to when we're done so I'm just gonna remove these comments ok and then this success URL is gonna match whatever your transistor FM website is and also needs to be set up in your dashboard so it has to be the same exact domain has to be set up in your checkout settings so under checkout settings here this stripe demo transistor FM you want to have your domain here you must have your domain here it won't work in production ok so back over here ok so now what I what I think I might want to do is say let's add an input field so that someone can enter like how much they want to pay and also I'm gonna add like a style some styles I am like super bad at CSS class you'll have to bear with me a little bit so the the idea here is that I'm gonna put this script tag down here at the bottom and what I think that I want is like two boxes next to each other inside of like a bigger box and the two boxes one of them is going to be for one-time payments and the other one is going to be for recurring payments so I'm gonna have a div that has the ID like container mm-hmm and that's gonna be just like the top-level container and to be just like explicit I'm gonna make it max width like 900 pixels or something 960 and so then inside the container I'm gonna want another div that has like class of like payment box or something so then I have like doc payment box and its width is gonna be like 400 pixels or something and let's actually have two of those and they're gonna have a little border okay so we've got a couple of boxes there ok so inside the box we're gonna have a label and that's going to say something like one-time donation and I like these little uh dropping in emojis can make things like super fun you can Oh No why didn't that work Ben thought that was like a command okay let's try again so yay all right so to open that emoji thing I've like it took me a while to learn this but if you hold like command ctrl and then space it it pops that open and then you can make emojis everywhere so recurring donation okay and for recurring okay and then I'm going to add an input this is going to be a number and doesn't have a name and it's ID is one time so the ID of the input needs to match the ID or the four of the label so that you can click on the label and that will focus the input this is going to have a value this is like the default value that we're gonna put in the min is going to be zero point five zero so for US dollars the minimum that you can collect is fifty cents so we'll add a minimum there and then other things that we might want for this class is like an amount input and then we'll style that just like a little bit dot dot ammount input and we'll say border is one pixel solid in the same kind of like CCC thing font size 34 I think that might make it big does it make a big nice okay big font for some reason people love big fonts padding six fourteen with 50% I'm just kind of like playing around here a little bit and then these labels so let's say like for the label that's in the payment box so payment box label let's make those display:block just so that they like force the input to go down okay and then like actually you want them next to each other like the payment boxes hmm oh wait no I want that like that but I want the payment box to be display:inline-block you guys are watching me learn can CSS right now I like em horrible CSS and I really want to get better at it and I need to practice way more okay the other thing about the label is we can make the font size similarly like 36 px just because yeah again big big fonts I assume that your or if you haven't already you can watch my other video about how to add custom fonts to your transistor website which is super cool it makes it look really sexy like this watch so for on on our website we use like some really sweet fonts that we got from google fonts so we have another video about that if you want to check that out okay all right so the next thing we need to do here is add the buttons inside of those payment boxes so I'm just gonna cut this button and put it inside here because that one is already set up for our one-time payment I'm also going to move I'm gonna give this a class of like donation BTN and then I'm going to move this style out here so that it's so that it's a not in line like that because it's it makes it so hard to read okay I'm just gonna kill the style so we have our ID we have our class we've got a donate button in there let's make a display block and then we can we can change the color too so maybe we want this to be the same color as our page and I really want to know the hex value for this oh there it is okay nice cool so refresh no where'd it go okay alright so we've got our donate button why is it okay input amount input display lock in the donation button width like 100% make it go all the way make the border radius a little sharper make the font size of that also a little bigger doesn't need a border doesn't have padding okay so now I've got like this cool donate button and then like everything is sort of scrunched up in there so let's make another thing here with everything inside a payment box should have like margin 10 zero or something I don't know just like scooch everything away that didn't do what I thought it was gonna do padding CSS for me is just like a lot of messing around with oh you know what I'm doing the wrong okay I want all the stuff that's in there not just the payment box oh I can do star that says like apply this to all the things that are inside so margin and then padding like 4px maybe does that do no let's see No I'm just messing around maybe we make the button 90% with okay so that looks like somewhat reasonable donate okay we've got our stuff okay so let's add the other donation button so the first one has this ID checkout button with the SKU embedded and that like lines up with the stuff that we copy pasted so that's already sort of set in stone so we need another button that's like subscribe and we're gonna change the ID on this to be like sub button because we need a different button and that button we're gonna hook up right now okay so we've got these two input boxes we've got some some fields that we can have people enter how much they want to pay one other thing I want to add is like how much or like what yeah we'll just put like the currency that's going to be in USD at the back end actually net whatever like let's leave that out for now you can you can you can mess around with this from here all right so let's go play with our JavaScript now okay so we have this like thing that's happening at the top where it's we are passing an anonymous function and then down here on line 1919 lines down we're invoking that immediately this is called an immediately invoked function expression this is that we can keep everything like together in one block so we have the we're initializing stripe then we're grabbing reference to the check out button and we're handling the click of the check out button so we need one more thing here at the top and that is to grab reference to the amount and use the amount to derive the quantity of how much we want to donate for one time so we're gonna say ammount and the ID of the amount input is ammount input and then this one needs to be like different the sub amount input so we'll say amount input oops sub amount sub amount sub amount input okay so we've got an amount input and we've got a sub amount input so the amount is going to be the amount input and we want to use that to derive the quantity here so this should be an integer value someone's gonna be entering five point zero zero four five dollars but we want to like send five hundred because we're buying five hundred pennies worth of this like donation thing so we need to say something like ammount value times 100 and then I want to wrap that in a parse int because that says like make this an integer if it's not already and then hopefully it gets close enough you can add like validation and fancy things if you want but really this is like super rudimentary like really basic way to get up and going okay the other thing I forgot on this was this this is actually supposed to be the ID sub amount in the class that I changed a class now I'm out and put the ID for that one is one time the ID for this one should be sub amount okay so this is I did this wrong one one time is the ID for that input so the ID for this input is one time and then the ID for the other input is sub amount so one time and then some amount yeah okay I got it wrong again sub amount just sub amount cool okay so we've got parse int for that value so let's just see let's take it for a world if we click donate what does that do does nothing oh no it works okay cool so that will totally work a villa Theory donation quantity 500 at a cent each it's a little funky but whatever like it's totally cool in like a lot of tools that are out there that allow you to collect donations or like collect support for your open source thing or like 5% or 8% or even higher ten twelve percent of like your monthly revenue which is like super super high whereas if you go direct through stripe you're looking at something more like two point nine nine plus $0.30 or something around there and you get out of the box you get like google pay Apple pay you can you can add even other payment methods and once this is set up and on your page when improvements happen to the Striped checkout product like you'll get those out of the box like for free which is super sweet okay back to here so that looks like it's working one-time donation is working if we click Subscribe nothing should happen because we haven't hooked up that button yet so we've got our we've got our redirect to checkout for our one time button now we need to also grab reference to our donation button I'm gonna actually move this down here so this is going to be like all of the one-time stuff one-time stuff and then this is going to be our free curring stuff okay I want to grab reference to the button and that other button is called and I keep forgetting donation button okay when you click that donation button we should say striped redirect to check out and then function and then it's like it's gonna be the same stuff okay actually we should maybe we should just say like whenever we you can extract this out to make it like cleaner and things like that but yeah it doesn't really matter okay same thing stripe reader I can check out so the only difference here is that instead of passing in items with the skew we're gonna pass in the items with the plan that's like the only difference so let's go back and get our plan ID again go to products in the stripe dashboard and then we look at our recurring product and we get the plan ID so this is the plan ID right here okay so instead of SKU we want to put plan and then instead of the SKU ID we're putting the plan ID okay if we go back over here sub amount that's actually going to be so now our number of things that we're donating is sub amount and that value okay and we get the result cool so if we click refresh over here that's actually refreshing all the time and we click Subscribe let's see what's going on nothing is happening so let's open the console here refresh cannot read add eventlistener of null so I bet this button is not donation button is that not the ID class ah the idea is sub button that's killing me today all right sub sub button everyone starts somewhere everyone makes mistakes that the trick to like all of this web development stuff is just like try things and if it works it works if it doesn't then you go just like keep practicing okay did I do this wrong again sub sub oh my gosh sub BTN alright okay refresh click Subscribe all right now we're subscribing we're subscribing like crazy cool very cool so now it says subscribe to a villa Theory 5 bucks a month you enter in some email address and some test password or some test test card there's like a bunch of stripe test cards if you go to stripe comm slash dog slash testing you can see all the different test cards that test like different scenarios but like for the most part you just use this for two for two for two card and you will be good to go click processing and now someone's gonna be subscribed for five bucks a month that's so cool awesome very cool the one other thing that we might want to do is if you come back to the page you'll notice that in the URL it says like success and then it has the ID of the checkout session so you might also want to say like if if they've just subscribed or if they've just bought a one time donation maybe we should like replace those donation buttons and those like payment forms everything with a thank you like if they just donated like we should say thanks because that's super awesome if people are like supporting you're supporting your stuff so let's see how do we want to do that so we have got like on our on our page here yeah so on our page we have these like we have a big huge box that has these two little boxes inside of it and the big box is called container and what I think we might want to do is just say like let's add another div that's called thanks we can say like thank you so much for your donation we love you and then we put in like a little heart because hearts are cool and then we can say is like by default we'll set the style of thanks so yeah see you like thanks by default is like display:none nobody gets thanks by default you gotta earn that you gotta earn that Thanks so then what we'll do is we'll say oh what I've been here huh what's going on yeah whatever we will say thank you so much for your donation we love you but we don't love you unless you really donate it just kidding okay so how do we how do we actually implement this well we can detect what's in the query string parameters with a little bit of JavaScript so we can say like use this like new URL search params thing and then we can say like success is success we can say if success meaning there was the success query string parameter like remember after we finished paying here let's go back to this again whatever blah blah blah processing when we get back to our page it says success equal to question mark success equals and then the the ID of the check out session so if success in our in our JavaScript code means like was there that query string parameter and if so which assume that someone just donated something so then we'll say like show thanks otherwise we'll just say like if success show Thanks and then our show thanks function show thanks will like hide and show things so we'll say like grab the thanks box that has the ID thanks and say like thanks box display dot or no style display is block and then we want to like hide we want to hide the the other box the container so we want to say container that's styled that display:none okay so that should like hide it but we can't actually test this yet because right now it's not redirecting back to 3000 it's redirecting back to stripe demo transistor so um so whatever that's cool well let's just like drop it in see what happens right so we don't need to copy all of the HTML like we don't actually need this head part because we only need like the transistor FM website is already giving us most of that structure we're only dropping in like the little part that that is like for the footer so the way that we do that is we can just like grab from here down to script I'm just gonna copy it bring it over here and I'm just gonna paste the entire thing here and then once that's pasted I've got my plan IDs I've got my publishable key is in here I've got all my stuff and again I'll share this in a gist later you can also put this on your about page only if you wanted I'm putting it in extra footer because then like it's on every single page and just reminds your listeners you know how they can hook you up I mean help you out okay saving the website settings let's preview and see what's up oh my gosh it's beautiful one-time donation recurring donation okay so let's try this out let's say we want to donate someone's gonna donate 50 bucks which covers like I don't know a month and a half of transistor or subscription which is pretty nice someone's been quite generous they click donate come over here enter their email address and their card numbers and then click pay and when they're redirected back now that we have this in a success URL it says thank you so much for a donation we love you and that's it that's what's up so cool steps had to transistor website yeah so then like what you would want to do after this is right now it's still in test mode we're we're taking just like fake payments in order to collect real payments you have to come over to your settings you have to like activate your account give a stripe some more information about like who you are and what your business is all about and then once you've done that you can you can switch to live mode and a couple of things are going to change so a couple of pieces of data are gonna change like most of your your code is gonna stay the same but some of the IDS are gonna change so the first change that you'll notice is that this SKU ID is going to be a different ID because you're going to be in live mode the SKUs that are in test mode are not the same as the SKUs they're in live mode same with plans okay the other thing that's going to change is your publishable key so this one says PK test so you'll go to developers you can go to the developers tab to your API keys and when you toggle this to live mode because you've activated your account you'll see a PK live and you want to replace that with your PK live key okay here's another instance of that skew value that you'll need to change and then one more that sometimes trips folks up is like this other skew so you'll need to change that one and then finally your plan ID that might be a little different cool all right well yeah I think this is like a really awesome way to allow your supporters to hook you up especially if you are if this is like a hobby you know if it's a side gig and it's just you and you're trying to try to put out good stuff and good content this is a way that you can have people show some appreciation so yeah I hope that that's helpful and yeah we'll see you next time Cheers
