## Description

Accepting a one-time payment with a custom form requires two steps. First, creating a PaymentIntent on the server. Second, confirming the payment intent on the client. It's also recommended that you handle fulfillment for a purchase when receiving a webhook notification of successful payment.

In this video, you'll learn how to create a PaymentIntent on the server using PHP and how to setup a basic Webhook handler. For part two of this series to confirm a PaymentIntent using a variety of payment methods, watch one of the videos in the playlists for front end frameworks:

## Transcript

in this episode we cover the basic server-side implementation for accepting a one-time payment with a custom form if you're interested in a faster integration path head over to the stripe developers channel and take a look at that checkout playlist the payment flow you'll see today for collecting a one-time payment has two steps first creating the payment intent on the server and second confirming the payment on the client using the client secret for the payment intent so in this episode you'll learn how to add the script to your server to create the payment intent depending on whether you're using vanilla js or react on the web or stripe ios or stripe android on mobile you can watch videos for those specific sort of front-end implementations that will pair with the code we implement here now rather than start from scratch we're going to jump start our server implementation using the developer office hours based sample if you want to see how we go from zero to one check out the starter episode for php linked in the description you might also be interested in an episode about working with the stripe cli it's a handy tool for helping you build and test your stripe integrations so rather than start from scratch we're going to start from the developer office hours base sample so in the in the terminal here we're going to write stripe samples create developer office hours and we'll give this one an alias of tutorial we'll be presented some options we're going to select html today with the php server so now we can change into the tutorial directory now we're going to spend all of our time in the server directory here so we'll change into that server directory and specifically in the public directory so let's just open up the project and take a look at what we've got so this this base sample comes with an index.php file which just has some simple html and some structure you'll notice that we're requiring this shared.php file which just includes the logic to load dependencies that are managed by composer and then load a dot n file here which contains our api keys in configuration and then finally constructs a new instance of a stripe client passing in our stripe secret key also in this sample it comes with the bare bones basic web hook endpoint or like a script for managing your web hook events let's start from index.php and add our api call so here at the top we're going to create a payment intent using the strike php client library so we can say payment intent is equal to and then we're going to use that stripe client that is available because we've we initialized it in shared and we're going to create a payment intent so we can say payment intents create and this accepts a an associative array with a bunch of different options the first one we'll pass is amount and we'll just give it 19.99 and a currency well initially we'll just pass usd now this amount value is denoted in the smallest denomination possible for this currency so in this case it's denoted in cents so we're passing in 19.99 this is actually 19.99 all right so now that we've got this sort of set up let's jump into another tab here and and we'll jump into the public directory so from another terminal instance i'm going to drill into that tutorial uh server directory and call composer install this will install all the dependencies managed by composer so stripe.php and php.n for the two top level dependencies and then we can use composer start to start up our php server which is now going to run at localhost on port 4242 so if we refresh the page here we should see our basic html that was rendered for office hours and our payment intent we believe was created so let's head back over here and print the client secret property for this payment intent now in many samples we will create the payment intent on the server and then render that as json back to the client rather than just injecting it directly here into the html but to keep things simple for php we're just going to use the short echo here and render back payment intent and it's client secret and this should give us the client secret for this payment intent directly on the page so if we refresh the page now we see the payment intents client secret so this is the client secret that we're going to want to pass in when we're calling confirm card payment or confirm alipay payment or confirm separate debit payment so this is the this is the key that we will need on the client in order to attempt to confirm a payment intent returning to our code let's talk about this api call to stripe now it turns out there are more than two dozen optional parameters that allow you to tailor the payment experience for your customers one of those is payment method types now payment method types expects a list of string values that represent the different options that you want to allow your customer to pay with now by default this is set to a single element with the word card which means that payment intents by default when we just pass the amount in currency those payment intents are only confirmable with a card payment method that we would collect from the customer now in practice you could technically hard code a set of payment method types here so alipay ideal shiro pay etc right to accept multiple different payment method types for this payment intent but for this demo and for this series we're going to show how to accept several different payment method types and we will pass in the name for the payment method type we want to confirm and also the currency now not every payment method type supports every currency it turns out that card payments support all the currencies that are supported by stripe however some currencies don't work like that so let's take a look at aubex debit which is a payment method type now when we refresh the browser we see an error message explaining that a ubex debit only works with the aud currency so if we were to head back to our code and change the currency to aud we now see the page rendered as expected with the client secret property for that payment intent first let's wrap our api call in a try catch block so we'll say try and then the error type that we're going to catch is a stripe exception for api error exception and we'll just put the value of that into a variable called e now in the case of an exception what we might do in this case is uh just pop out of php and render a simple html page explaining to user that the payment creating the payment failed so we can just say you know pop out of php and render some html that will just be an h1 tag that has error and we'll put in an explanation that says the payment creation failed really simple for now and then in addition to that what we want to do is make sure that we have record of the error like the more more details of the error that happened so we can use error log here and pass in dollar e and once we've saved that we can now refresh our page and note again that we are using an invalid combo of payment method type and currency and ideally we now have an easier to read error message and here we see okay error payment creation failed let's change it back to aud and refresh the page and now we see our client secret property printed as expected so now we're at least handling those errors by not just spitting them all out directly into uh into the browser so it turns out that most payment method types complete payment asynchronously this is why we highly recommend implementing a webhook handler for automating fulfillment logic so in our web hook script here we have one case that was provided for us but today what we want to do is simply listen for the payment intent dot created event and if that fires then we will log something to the console that just says payment intent created and we'll take a look so today we'll use the stripe cli to test our web hook we can use the stripe listen command which forms a direct connection between your stripe account and your local running server so that when events happen on your stripe account they will be delivered to this locally running server now stripe listen expects a url to which events should be forwarded so we can say forward to localhost 4242 webhook.php now as events happen on our stripe account they will be delivered to our webhook endpoint which is listening for that payment intent created event and we'll print to the server log here when we receive it so we should be able to just refresh our page which will cause a brand new payment intent to be created and a payment intent created event to fire so in the logs for stripe listing we see the payment intent dot created event fire that's great we got a 200 response back from from our locally running server and in the server logs here we see that payment intent was created all right so let's improve our logging here just a bit and talk about what kind of data is available when we deserialize that payload that comes from stripe so it turns out that the payment because we're listening to event types that start with payment intent dot an instance of the payment intent is available in event.data.object so we can say the payment intent is equal to event data object which contains the payment intent instance now if we were to update our log statement here let's use a s print f and we'll just say that like we want to print out the ids for the event the id for the payment intent and the status of the payment intent so we'll just print the whole status here and now we can say event id payment payment intent id and the payment intent status all right so now we should have a little bit more detail in our error statement that happens so let's refresh our page and see what those error logs look like all right so a new payment intent was created and in the logs we now see a much better error message that includes the event id the id of the payment intent and the status of the payment intent which right now is requires payment method that's because we have not created an instance of a specific payment method so we haven't provided specific card details or bank account details in order to confirm this payment intent that is the expected state and so this is looking really good now it turns out there's lots of different event types that we can listen to so created pending or processing succeeded uh cancelled and more it'll be interesting to see these different event types as we test different payment method types so paymentintent.canceled will fire if the payment intent is canceled so payment intent dot payment failed will fire if there was a failure to create either the payment intent or the payment method related to the payment paymentintent.processing will fire when a payment intent has started processing when we have a payment method type that might take a long time to confirm human intent requires action will fire when a payment intent requires some next steps so for instance maybe 3d secure which is required for secure customer authentication in the european economic area finally payment intent that succeeded which is the happy path that means the payment was successful and we collected payment from the customer this is the most common one that you'll want to likely build automations around where you're sending an email sending someone a thank you message pulling from inventory updating your database etc all right so as just a quick recap we went into index.html and we created a new api call to create a payment intent and then we rendered that payment intense client secret directly into the html we're going to come back later in a future episode and we will use this client secret with javascript in order to confirm a card payment when someone fills out their card details and then submits a form we also added some error handling to the payment intent create call and finally we added some logging to our web hook handler when payment attempt events fire next we recommend heading over to the one of the playlists that most closely fits your front end implementation you can use the links in the description or head over to the stripe developers channel and take a look at those playlists thanks so much for watching and we'll see you in the next one you
