what's up everyone today i've got six tips for working with json from the terminal using jq i've downloaded the star wars characters with l in their name from the star wars api number one the dot operator aka the identity function will give you back the same json but nicely formatted number two the keys function shows us which keys are available on the object number three object index into a specific key is just like accessing a property of a json object with javascript number four array indices work as you expect too so you can get the first item of an array by passing index zero number five the pipe operator which allows you to combine filters by feeding the output of one into the other just like you'd expect with unix we can use the pipe operator in the first function as an alternative to array indexing number six the array and object construction you can construct arrays with other jq expressions here we'll create an array of the character's name and hair color this only scratches the surface of what jq can do subscribe for more terminal tips and we'll see you next time
